Orthodontic Myths Debunked: Separating Fact from Fiction

If you haven’t been to an orthodontist in Melbourne, FL in many years, you might be surprised to know how much the medical science has advanced. Because of innovations in terms of practice, materials, and knowledge, orthodontic medicine is not how many people might remember it. There are a lot of myths, despite the fact that the industry has moved well beyond older practices. Here are some of the top myths about orthodontics and the truth about them.

Myth 1: Braces Only Work for Kids and Teens

This is one of the most common myths that we hear at Melbourne Orthodontics. It’s simply not true, however. While certain issues are easier to treat when a patient is young, that does not mean that an adult cannot benefit from braces, Invisalign, or other treatments. The gums and supporting bone structure in children make it easier to shift the teeth into their new locations.

That doesn’t mean that braces will not work in an adult with a fully formed bone structure. It just might take a bit longer for treatment. If you are an adult or are self-conscious about treatment, we have the option of tooth-colored ceramic braces, known as “invisible braces,” which are popular. Invisalign, which is also extremely unobtrusive, works on many of the same principles as braces.

Myth 2: Orthodontics Are Painful

For the first few days after you are equipped with new braces, you will feel some pressure on your teeth and discomfort. This is usually mild and can be treated with ibuprofen or other OTC pain medications. But is it painful? Most people don’t describe it that way. It takes some getting used to having the new brackets and wires in your mouth, but this goes away very soon. Braces are now more comfortable than they have ever been before, and modern science has shrunk the brackets and wires to the point where the adjustment period is minimal — as is the discomfort.

Myth 3: Braces or Invisalign Are Simply Cosmetic

A persistent myth about orthodontic treatment is that it is simply cosmetic. That’s simply not true. While there is a cosmetic aspect to having straighter teeth, there are also emotional and health benefits to having a great smile. As far as the emotional side, your child’s oral health can have a direct impact on academic performance in school. Having a straight smile can help in social interactions, job interviews, and other situations.

Straight teeth are also easier to keep clean and well-flossed. This reduces the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other problems over a patient’s lifespan. Braces can also correct a misalignment of a patient’s jaw, which can contribute to TMJ, migraine headaches, or other problems. Most dental insurance plans will help pay for braces because the treatment is recognized to provide significant health benefits to patients.

Myth 4: Braces Are All That Orthodontists Offer

Orthodontists are best known for braces since that was the first orthodontic treatment that was used (more than 200 years ago). Braces are still the most popular treatment used in preteens and teens, by far. However, the science has progressed to the point where there are many additional treatments that your orthodontist in Melbourne can offer. For those who are self-conscious about treatment, invisible braces or Invisalign may be an option. These methods are not nearly as visible as traditional metal-and-wire braces and don’t make it immediately obvious that you are undergoing treatment.

Myth 5: Braces Are Too Expensive

At Reddick Orthodontics, we accept all forms of insurance when it comes to braces. We don’t charge a set fee for braces, because every patient is unique. Some patients may need treatment for a longer period of time. We offer zero-interest financing as one option and also accept most major credit cards and health savings accounts. We even offer a 5 percent discount for those who choose to pay for their treatment in full and in advance. You don’t have to break the bank to receive treatment with braces, Invisalign, or other orthodontic treatments with us.
