Can Your Bite Make You Seem Smarter?

One of the first things people notice is your smile and as your Melbourne orthodontist we want to make sure it’s a great one! Healthy, straight teeth can help create a lasting first impression with those you meet, but what about your bite alignment? A study in the American Journal of Orthodontics explored how different occlusions and malocclusions affect a person’s perceived attractiveness. The researchers found that different types of bite are actually perceived as more attractive or less attractive than others.

The researchers surveyed 889 patients by asking them to evaluate different photos of people with normal occlusion or one of six different types of malocclusion, including an open bite, deep bite, underbite, overjet, crowding, and spacing. Based on the results, patients with a normal bite were perceived as more attractive, intelligent, conscientious, agreeable, and extroverted. Those with an underbite were rated the worst in each of the categories with the other malocclusions also receiving poor marks as compared to the normal occlusion. Based on the results, researchers were able to conclude that normal occlusion positively impacts a person’s perceptions.

A properly aligned bite not only affects how others perceive you, but it also has an impact on your overall oral health and teeth function.
